What is IGP/Schutzhund

IGP—formerly known as Schutzhund or IPO—is a working dog sport that evaluates a dog’s ability in three core areas: tracking, obedience, and protection. Originally developed in Germany in the early 1900s to assess the suitability of German Shepherds for police and military work, the sport has evolved into an internationally recognized discipline for many breeds.

Each phase of IGP tests specific traits: tracking assesses scenting ability and focus; obedience evaluates precision, control, and teamwork; protection tests courage, control, and responsiveness under pressure. Dogs must demonstrate not only skill but also temperament, trainability, and a strong bond with their handler.

IGP is structured into levels (IGP 1, 2, and 3), with increasing difficulty and complexity. Handlers and dogs train extensively to earn titles, and competitions are held worldwide. The sport promotes responsible training, mental and physical fitness, and the preservation of working dog qualities.

At Redwood Coast Schutzhund Club, we embrace IGP as a path to excellence, partnership, and personal growth—for both dog and handler.
